The inscription was found by Aspelin in 1888 in a valley through which the stream Kara-sug flows into the Enisei from the right about 2 kilometres from the mouth of the river Elegest. The inscription consisted of five vertical lines, with two lines on the front and three on the back side of the stele. Due to poor preservation and significant damage over time, only the third line remains partially legible today. The stone was transported to the National Museum of the Republic of Tyva in 1961. It measures 190 x 41 x 16 centimetres.
